Halloween: An Opportunity in Disguise?

Are you willing to go into the shadows?

Halloween can teach us a lot about ourselves. It is an opportunity to learn about our fears, our desires, and our willingness to explore them.

Halloween is a holiday with many scenarios that incorporate the element of fear. You have probably invited this emotion into your life when you have:

  • clung to your seat by watching the re-runs of “Scream” and “Friday the 13th,
  • decorated your house with of the theme of scary monsters and blood sucking vampires,
  • and played “tricks” on others to evoke the element of surprise…

And how many of us risk our own emotional wherewithal by going to a chilling, spine tingling, haunted house?

I recently watched a video from the Ellen DeGeneres show where she sends two of her employees, Andy and Amy, through the haunted house at Universal Studios. I don’t believe Andy had a choice in the matter. I found it to be hilarious… because I wasn’t there…But I’m not sure I would have thought it was funny if I had been chosen to go through it!

Check out Ellen’s video here

How would you have responded if you had that opportunity? Would you have gone willingly? Why or why not?

Let’s look at this realistically. You know that you would be safe because there is nothing that will hurt you in a commercialized haunted house. The fear that arises in the haunted house is imagined. Your mind has created all of it. So when we look at this more deeply, it is really about the fear of the unknown and the element of surprise. So what does that say about you?

People who are willing to step out of their comfort zone and face their fears are more likely to feel a sense of personal freedom and success. They are risk takers and have faith as well as a strong belief in themselves. They rarely feel trapped in any situation and look forward to experiencing new adventures. Life becomes fun because there is variety.

So if you were to turn down Ellen’s opportunity to go through the haunted house out of fear, is it possible that you are also scared about your future? Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone so that you can grow into your full potential?

Halloween may provide you with a great opportunity to explore your goals and dreams so that you can take the necessary steps to find your life’s purpose and utilize your unique gifts and talents to serve humanity. When people go to haunted houses, they usually don’t go alone. They take a friend for support and encouragement to help them face their fears of the unknown. The same is true for life. When we receive the support we need from another, our goals become so much easier to manifest.

And what can Halloween tell you about who you are? What costume have you chosen (or would have chosen) to wear on Halloween? What does it say about what you want? If you are drawn to dressing up like a vampire, is it possible that you sub-consciously want power and a need to feel significant? Or would you prefer a goddess costume with the desire to attain a feeling of Universal oneness with all things?

If you choose to become conscious of what fascinates you on Halloween, you can discover its deeper meaning for you. Begin by asking yourself, ” What is my desired underlying feeling that exists beneath my disguise?” Is it  power? freedom? fun? What’s presently missing in your life? What’s your vision of who you want to become?

Here’s the good news. It’s an illusion. Whatever you want, it already exists within you…It simply takes courage to attack your fears so you can express this hidden part of your truth. Ask for support, remove the disguise…and enjoy experiencing the freedom to be who you are.
