Once in a Blue Moon…

blue moon

I often used the statement, “Once in a Blue Moon…” but never really understood what a blue moon was.  I knew to say it when I was referring to something that was rare, but didn’t stop to investigate if there was really such a thing.

So, with this “blue moon” phenomenon happening on Friday, July 31, 2015, I decided to do some research.  I found out that it only occurs once every two to three years.  I also learned that there are actually two definitions according to www.timeanddate.com:

The first definition describes a blue moon as the third full moon in an astronomical season when there are four full moons.  And, July 31 will have the third full moon this summer.  Usually there are only 3 full moons per season.

The second definition says that a blue moon occurs when there are two full moons in a month. This definition came about by mistake from an astronomer who published an article saying that there was a blue moon because it was the second one in a month.  Although it was refuted, the definition stuck because it was easier to remember than the original definition.

And what about the color “blue?”  For a moon to look blue, it requires the atmosphere to have smoke or dust particles of a certain size, occurring after dust storms or volcanic eruptions.  This obviously is a very rare sight.  Chances are slim that it will really look blue on July 31.

So, what can that mean for us on a metaphysical level?  I see it as an opportunity for change.  We are at the end of a cycle and the beginning of another.  This is a great time for introspection.

  • Get clear on what you want to create in your life.
  • Perform a ritual for yourself by writing down things you want to release in your life as well as intentions of what you want to create.
  • Sit under the ‘blue moon’ for about a half hour, and read those intentions aloud.
  • Feel the feminine energy of the moon fill you up as you release the old and welcome the new.
  • Give gratitude in advance for those things that you want to manifest in your life.

Know that the world is our mirror…and the moon will definitely reflect what is going on inside of us. Being in the presence of something so rare makes me think that something we don’t see very often is going to be reflected back to us. What do you see when you look at the moon? Something big?…Something beautiful?…Something whole?  “All that I see, I am.”  I believe it to be so.
