Talking Stick

Ahhhhhh….a lesson in listening.  One of the hardest things for many of us to do is “listen.” Too often we are caught up in our heads that are buzzing with the same thoughts that we have 65,000 times a day. So even when other people are talking to us and expressing their viewpoints, our minds can race ahead and we already start thinking about how we want to answer them without even giving them the courtesy to complete their sentence.

The Talking Stick card was pulled for this week and is a lesson that reminds us how important it is to listen to other’s viewpoints.  It is a tool used by Native Americans in Council that is passed from person to person.  Only the person who is holding the stick is given permission to speak at that time. This gives the speaker full attention to impart wisdom and is given full respect from the others.  Each person’s viewpoint is honored and valued.

Phoenix Adventures in Wellness gives women an opportunity for their voice to be heard and respected during “Life Talks,” a monthly gathering of wise women who are open, honest and committed to personal and spiritual growth.  Each woman shares her wisdom as it applies to a teaching from a pre-selected Sacred Path Card while holding the Talking Stick. (Our beautiful and powerful Talking Stick pictured above was designed by Ken Horst, owner of Tribal Arts in Wood, Sante Fe, Mexico.)

Sometimes we need to ask ourselves why we don’t give the other person our full attention.  Is it because we think he/she has nothing of value to offer?  Do we need to be right and therefore, disregard any one else’s opinions?  Do we think there are no other options except for our own?

This week’s lesson is to be present as we listen to others viewpoints. If we have a question and are not sure how to proceed, the Talking Stick card is telling you that, if you pay attention, you will be offered other options. This means that we should not interrupt other’s or pre-judge them by thinking they have nothing to offer.

And, if you are one of many people who can’t slow down their thoughts enough to listen to others, practice meditation. Or at least, try to focus by taking a couple of deep breaths as you enter a conversation to get you centered and grounded in the present moment.

In addition, remember that the Universe hears our thoughts and will show us the answers.  Be mindful of your thinking when you ask yourself a question.  If you ask yourself, “Why don’t I know what to do?” The Universe will demonstrate that by not giving you the clarity you need.  Rather, ask yourself, “Why does the Universe make me so excited as it always provides me with the best options for dealing with this situation?” Then watch who shows up…and listen.
